Gun Dog Training in Tyler, Texas

Develop a confident, capable hunting partner. Our gun dog programs build bird drive, steadiness, marking ability, and reliable retrieves — everything you need in the field.

The Program

Built for Hunters Who Demand Performance

Our Basic Gun Dog Program is designed to teach your pup all the fundamentals to be hunt ready. Before starting our gun dog program we require that your pup has been through our basic obedience program first. We also work on retrieve and bird drive during our obedience program before moving them to the gun dog program.

We primarily work with labs but will train with other retrieving breeds if the hunt drive is present. Please remember that not all dogs have the drive to retrieve birds but we help build this drive as much as possible. The duration of training is approximately 6 months including basic obedience. During this we build drive, work on steadiness, ensure they deliver to hand, and more.

The training is boarded like our other trainings but scheduled visits are welcomed and encouraged. There will be several training sessions where you will be taught commands and how to handle your dog. A Dogtra E-collar, list of commands, and a certificate of completion will be included. Up to date shot records are required and we will provide the food for your dog for the duration of training.

What the Gun Dog Program Develops

Our program is comprehensive and sequential — each phase builds on the last to produce a complete, reliable hunting dog.

Bird Introduction & Bird Drive

Every gun dog program begins with establishing a strong bird drive. We introduce young dogs to birds in a controlled, positive environment that builds confidence and natural hunting instincts from the very first session.

Steadiness to Wing & Shot

A steady dog is a better hunting dog. We develop the discipline to remain steady at flush and shot — a critical skill for any serious hunting partner that prevents bumped birds and unsafe situations in the field.

Marking & Handling Foundations

Good marking ability comes from building spatial awareness and memory under controlled conditions. We develop confident single and multiple marks, and introduce handling skills for blind retrieves.

Retrieve Work & Water Entry

A reliable retrieve starts on land and progresses to water. We build a complete, enthusiastic retrieve with proper hold, carry, and delivery to hand — in both upland and waterfowl scenarios.

Field Confidence

A confident dog hunts hard all day. We expose dogs to a variety of terrains, cover types, and hunting scenarios to build the mental toughness and field presence that separates good dogs from great ones.

Delivery & Control

Field control keeps hunts safe and productive. We build reliable obedience in hunting scenarios — honoring other dogs, handling pressure, and responding to commands even under the excitement of birds and shots.

First-Season Dog Owners
Starting your dog's training before their first season is the best investment you can make. We build the foundation that every successful hunting season depends on.
Experienced Hunters Who Want More
Your dog hunts, but not the way you need it to. Whether it's a range issue, soft mouth, broken steadiness, or poor marking — we can identify and fix what's holding your dog back.
Puppy Owners Planning Ahead
Starting early with a puppy sets the stage for everything that comes later. We offer puppy foundations that build the right attitudes and responses from day one.

Gun Dog Training FAQs

What breeds do you train in your gun dog program?
We work with retrievers (Labrador, Golden, Chesapeake Bay), pointing breeds (German Shorthair, Vizsla, Brittany, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon), spaniels (Springer, Cocker), and other sporting breeds. If you have a question about a specific breed, reach out and we'll discuss.
At what age should I start gun dog training?
Foundational puppy work can begin as early as 8–10 weeks. Structured gun dog training typically begins around 6–12 months of age. Starting early gives you a significant advantage going into your dog's first hunting season.
How long does a gun dog training program take?
It depends on your dog's starting point and your goals. A foundational program for a young dog often runs 8–12 weeks. More advanced or comprehensive programs, especially for dogs going into serious hunting situations, can run 12–20+ weeks.
Will my dog need to board during training?
Boarding during training is strongly recommended for gun dog programs. Daily structured sessions combined with a consistent environment produces significantly better results than weekly sessions with a dog living at home.
Can you work with an older dog that has already developed bad habits?
In many cases, yes. We've helped older dogs work through range issues, hard mouth, poor steadiness, and other problems. The key is an honest assessment of where the dog is and a realistic plan for improvement.
